One to one coaching for children
My style of highly effective coaching and mentoring gives children and young people the opportunity to take responsibility for their habits and actions and to make positive changes. Healthy lifestyle habits and increased self-confidence reduce anxiety and depression which are currently at record levels for UK children.
I deliver a series of confidential, one to one sessions with children, aged 11 to 25, online or face to face. Coaching is effective because it offers the following:
- An agreed goal at the start of the coaching period. Every coaching session will have a ‘focus’ decided by the young person
- A system of working ‘in partnership’ which gives young people a choice of how they reach their desired goal. Research shows that when an individual is given choices their motivation is far higher and they will sustain effort towards a goal
- Personal accountability. Coaches never guarantee fantastic results – the change that the young person desires is achieved with effort, dedication and persistence. The time scales for change in behaviour or ways of thinking will vary depending on the individual
- Tools that address negative patterns of thinking. A young person is given strategies they can use on a daily basis for the rest of their lives. Some of these tools are positive mindset behaviours, reframing thoughts to focus attention on positive experiences, reducing anxiety and minimising ‘catastrophising’ by using affirmations and journaling and visualisation exercises
- Increased levels of self-awareness. It is human nature to ‘brush off’ compliments and positive feedback and to ‘hold onto’ criticism and negative comments. Coaching can change a person’s perception of their potential. Time is given to identify strengths, celebrate successes and understand why progress has faltered
- Coaching focuses on small, achievable steps and for neuro-diverse young people who often have low frustration thresholds and limited attention spans, breaking down large tasks or goals into smaller parts is extremely beneficial
- ADHD young people and those who have other learning styles that are not neuro-typical can benefit from having a mentor/coach who understands their unique world and can offer a variety of strategies to reduce self-criticism and low self-esteem
